Beer Spotlight of the Week
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In this section we're going to focus on one outstanding beer each week.
And of course, you can try them at Taco Mac!
This week we shine on Abita Turbo Dog. Try one at your favorite Taco Mac today!
Region of Origin: Abita Springs, LA
Style: Porter
Dark chestnut red. Medium-bodied. Mild bitterness. Mild astringency. Soy aromas with a strong caramel accent. Fine carbonation. Sweet caramel malt flavors up front give way to a crisp, almost zesty finish. Very refreshing and stylish, the antidote to New Orleans humidity.
POLICE FIND BEER THIEVES PUSHING STALLED GETAWAY CAR
LONDON, Ontario -- The getaway car didn't run and the video cameras caught it all on tape. But somehow five men who threw a concrete block through the door of a local beer store last month thought they could get away with a cache of beer.
One of the men, Philip Sheldrick, 22, sheepishly pleaded guilty Thursday to theft and was sentenced to 100 days in jail for the Oct. 14 break-in that his own lawyer called "absolutely ridiculous."
Security guards called police after seeing a door smashed and men inside the store at about 11 p.m. Outside the store, police and the guards found two men pushing a broken-down 1987 Pontiac Grand Am as a third man tried to steer it.
The trio ran and joined another two other men heading east. One was found hiding in some bushes in a yard. The police dog unit tracked down the rest, including Sheldrick. Inside the car, police found four cases of beer stolen from the store's display refrigerator.
"If it wasn't criminal, it was comical," said Sheldrick's lawyer, Michael Barry. Ontario Court Justice Kathleen McGowan called the 100-day sentence "generous" based on Sheldrick's criminal record. He "demonstrated no respect for the property of others and no respect for the law," she said.
One of the first brewpubs to open in America since Prohibition was Buffalo Bill's Brewery in Hayward, California. The pub was founded by the Godfather of the brewpub business, Buffalo Bill Owens. Owens, an ward-winning photographer and homebrewer, badgered the California legislature to change the liquor laws so beer manufacturers could sell directly to the public. When the revised brewpub law went into effect in September 1983, Owens opened the taps.
