The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has blocked Diageo's joint $8.15 billion bid with Pernod Ricard for the Seagram portfolio, which includes Captain Morgan rum, on fears it would create a U.S. rum duopoly with industry leader Bacardi. Diageo already owns the Malibu brand of white rum. The U.S. is by far Malibu's most important market, with sales in that country more than three times greater than France, the next most important market for the coconut-flavoured beverage. This type of measurement is used to determine how much malt is in a beer, and hence, its alcoholic strength. If a beer has a specific gravity of 1.040, it is 1.04 times heavier than water.
