Sun Jie, an official at the State Administration of Light Industry, indicated that Chinese production has been growing at an annual rate of 25% in the past decade. (RBPMail 6.04, April 2000) * German researchers are working on a genetically modified beer with a long-lasting froth, New Scientist Magazine reports. Ulf Stahl and a team of scientists at the Technical Institute University in Berlin have produced a brewer's yeast used in the fermentation process that is enhanced with a gene called LTP1 to produce a better froth. The genetically modified yeast secretes so much of the forth making protein, the beer will produce the same amount of foam regardless of the quality of the barley. Stahl and German brewers don't think there is much of a market for the beer because of the German public's opposition to genetically modified food. (RBPMail 6.04, April 2000) * Coors Brewing Co. has launced a new ad campaign aimed at the gay beer buyer, according to a May 27 Advertising Age article by Hillary Chura. The record spending spree will feature an ad spoofing Grant Wood's American Gothing painting featuring gay men holding bottles of Coor's Light in the famous poses of the farmer and his wife. The gay community is considered highly brand-loyal. The ads will not be restricted to "gay only" publications, but will be seen in more "general market" situations. Coors as well as Anheuser Busch and Miller Brewing have been targeting the gay community for a few years now. Last year, beer marketers spent approximately $1.5 million on advertising aimed at gay consumers. (BEERWeekTM April 3-10, 2000) * Rogue Ales acquired the assets of the Issaquah Brew House, a 7-barrel brewpub established in 1995 located in the downtown historic district of Issaquah, Washington. Rogue will continue to brew the flagship Bullfrog Ale and other favorites, and has expanded the draft selection to feature a variety of Rogue Ales. The pub will continue to be called the Issaquah Brew House. Issaquah Brewhouse, 35 W. The practice was no doubt abused. The more giving and kind the guest might be, the more tipsy he would have to become to help his unfortunate friend or neighbor. There are, accordingly, records of the prohibition of this custom. (The Encyclopedia of Beer. Christine P. Rhodes, editor)
