The agreement will help manufacturers in many industries-including the brewing industry-by lowering or eliminating high tariffs on imports that both countries have held to during decades-long trade war. Under the agreement the 58% tariff on beer made from malt will be eliminated. (BEERWeekTM Week of Mar 20-27, 2000) * Several traditional Irish pubs in Philadelphia are boycotting Guinness products because they are upset that Guinness Import Co. is allocating significant resources to train companies who are building a network of upscale Irish-themed pubs. At least ten pubs are participating in the boycott including McGillin's Olde Ale House, the oldest bar in Philly. Representatives for the Guinness Bass Import Co were not available for comment for the AP story. (BEERWeekTM Week of Mar 20-27, 2000) * People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have pulled their on-campus "Got Beer?" ads, a parody of the milk industry "got milk" ads because Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) complained it would inspire underage drinking. PETA began the ad to illustrate the cruel treatment of cows on farm milk factories. PETA maintains that drinking beer is better than drinking milk because beer has no fat, cholesterol, hormones, or antibiotics. Wehle's brother Charles succeeds him as controlling shareholder in the company. Wehle was elected chairman in 1993 after the death of his father, John, Sr. (BEERWeekTM Week of Mar 20-27, 2000) Did You know? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Alehorn: A large animal horn used as a cup, often with a metal or wooden stand to allow the horn to rest upright. Usually from oxen or cows, these vessels held about a half-pint of beer. The ale horn assumed political significance following the Norman invasion of Britain of 1066. During that time, the occupying Normans required their Saxon subjects to drink beer only in the company of a Norman, presumably in an attempt to prevent beer induced rebellions. This practice gave rise to a ritual called "peg-drinking". A large common horn was passed among a group, with each person's measure clearly marked by a wooden peg. The idea was to prevent drunkenness among the Saxons and to prevent anyone from drinking more than his share. The expression "take him down a peg" still survives to this day.
