Festival wine booths were also draped with ivy in honor of Bacchus, the Greek god of wine. Both customs survived the Roman occupation of Britain. The custom of hanging an ale bush from a sign post is repeated in numerous cultures throughout the world today, including remote areas of Peru, Africa, Eastern Europe nd Mongolia. Wherever in the world floral displays and ale bushes announce "beer for sale" that beer will have been made by women. (The Encyclopedia of Beer. Christine P. Rhodes, editor)
