Cooking With Beer ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Grilled Vegetable Salad 1 crookneck yellow squash, 1 lb 1 large zucchini squash, 1 lb 3 medium onions 6 portabello mushrooms 1 japanese eggplant 1 red bell pepper, cored and sliced 1 green bell pepper, cored and sliced 1 yellow bell pepper, cored and sliced 1 cup honey ale 1 cloves garlic , minced 2 tbs grated fresh ginger 1 tbs honey 1/2 cup olive oil 1/2 tsp chili garlic paste * Prepare a charcoal fire in a grill. Wash all the vegetables and slice into even thicknesses of approximately 1/2 inch. Blend all ingredients for basting sauce. * When the coals are ashy and glowing, place vegetables on the grill. Baste the vegetables with the beer sauce as they cook to prevent them from drying out. * Place on a platter and serve with grilled fish or chicken. The article, published in the Southern Economic Journal details research indicating that higher state taxes on alcohol has little or no effect on the rate of drunken driving fatalities. (BEERWeekTM-week of jan 10-17) * The three largest brewers in the UK have become the talk of the recent worldwide consolidation push as foreign brewers size up the british beer market. The top three, Scottish & Newcastle, Bass Plc, and Whitbread Plc, are all linked to growing rumors which indicate they will align with other breweries or get out of the brewing business. S&N is rumored to have alliance with the Danish brewer Carlsberg A/S, while Bass is considering getting out of the brewing business altogether. Whitbread is supposedly talking with Belgian and Dutch companies about possible partnerships. (BEERWeekTM-week of jan 10-17) * Pubs and breweries in the UK are planning a price war which could see the price of a pint drop by at least a third. The Sunday Telegraph stated that J.D. Weatherspoon Plc, known for its discounts, has reported a 25% price cut on 23brands in pubs outside of London and industry is expected to follow suit. Pints that were selling for 1.80 pounds will sell for less than 1.25 pounds. This marks the first time that A-B has been chosen to be a national sponsor. For example, in 1363 the inhabitants of Abbeville, France were granted a tax on ale for the purpose of repairing their fortifications.
