Taylor (1580-1653) was born in Gloucester, England. A master of self-promotion, he fancied himself a poet with such relentless conviction that he soon became accepted as one. Although he extolled the virtues of a pot of good ale in more than 100 tracts and pamphlets, both he and his books are now all but forgotten. Taylor was a customs agent, an adventurer by land and sea, a saloon keeper, a publisher, and for 40 years, the greatest advocate of good beer. (The Encyclopedia of Beer. Christine P. Rhodes, editor)
