Giordano, The Old Bay Restaurant, New Brunswick, NJ 2 cups pitted fresh cherries 3/4 cup Belgian Red Ale (Rodenbach) Half a loaf of sliced egg or challa bread (left out overnight to harden) 1/4 gallon whole milk 4 whole eggs 3/4 lb cane sugar 1/2 lb dark brown sugar 1/4 lb butter, softened 2 tbs vanilla 1/2 cup chopped pecans 1/4 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp nutmeg 1/4 tsp allspice * Soak cherries in ale overnight, tossing occasionally. To prepare the sauce, place half the marinated hcerries in saucepan. Bring to a low simmer over medium low heat. Cook for 3 minutes. Remove from heat and puree in a mixer or food processor until smooth. Chill slightly before serving on the bread pudding. * In a large bowl crumble the bread into small pieces. In another bowl whisk together the milk, eggs, sugar, butter, vanilla, pecans, spices and half the marinated cherries, reserving the rest of the cherries for the sauce. * Coat a pan with nonstick oil spray. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Pour the mixture over the bread and work together with your hands until all moisture is absorbed. Pour into the prepared pan. Flatten mixture slightly and cover with foil. Place covered dish in oven and bake for 1.5 hours. Remove foil and cook until a knife inserted into pudding comes out clean. Remove from oven and let cool for 1 hour. Serve warm with cherry sauce and a glass of Belgian Red ale. A-B and S&N were each fined 3,000 Euros for "omitting relevant information" about agreed upon plans to market Budweiser beer in the U.K. (BEERWeekTM-Week of Dec 20-27th) * Anheuser Busch was ranked number four in a list of corporations which have shown the most market savvy in their respective businesses in a December 13 Advertising Age article by Jack Neff. The rest of the top five included Proctor & Gamble at No. 1, McDonald's at No. 2, Coca-Cola at No. 3, and Nike at No. 5. (BEERWeekTM-Week of Dec 20-27th) * Anheuser Busch will pay $2.2 million for each of its ten Superbowl advertisements. The ads, for Bud and Bud Light, will air during Superbowl XXXIV, on Jan 30, 2000. Anheuser Busch spends about $125 million per year on Bud Light ads and about $108 million on Budweiser. (BEERWeekTM-Week of Dec 20-27th) * "G", a new electronic magazine, has begun to reach web fans. The "e-zine", part of Guinness's project to attract the new online audience is an "irreverent, cheeky peek at the best local entertainment offerings" for target consumers, males 18-34. The magazine offers listings for local drinking establishments in a comedic manner customized to the recipient's locality. The company reported 10,000 subscribers in the first ten days, and expects 50,000 by the year's end. The term originated in England in September 1833, when Richard Turner, drunk on ale, stumbled into a temperance meeting and took the pledge, swearing off alcohol forever. In declaring to the crowd his total abstinence, Turner, who had a speech impediment, stuttered, "Tee-tee-total".
