The English word for tavern derives from this Latin word. The wreath of grapevines was a signal that new wine was available. The Roman Empire operated on a commercial basis. Along the main routes throughout the empire taverns were established to sustain travelers. Since the majority of people were illiterate and of many nationalities, symbols or signs were the best way of communication. (The Encyclopedia of Beer. Christine P. Rhodes, editor)
