Sicera was made by the Jews during their captivity in Babylon. It was believed to ward off Leprosy. Sicera, which comes from the Latin "Cicera ex lupulis confectan" now refers to any intoxicating liquor other that wine that is made from corn, honey, or fruit. Some scholars maintain that the Hebrew word "sicera" which is translated as "strong drink" in the Bible, is really the barley wine mentioned by the Greek historian Herodotus and that the Israelites brought knowledge of its use from Egypt. In every biblical passage, sicera is mentioned separately as being disinct from wine. (Encyclopedia of Beer, Christine P. Rhodes, editor.)
