This was one of many attempts to combat and find a cure for scurvy, which especially plagued seaman. Scurvy was the main cause of the ill health and low morale of seafarers around the world. Although scurvy grass ale was nutritious and healthful, it was not the solution to this problem. Eventually, scurvy was attributed to lack of vitamin C and could thus be prevented by eating Vitamin C enriched foods. (Encyclopedia of Beer, Christine P. Rhodes, editor.)
