Cooking With Beer ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Honey-Ginger Ale Dressing 1/2 cup honey 1 tsp cornstarch 1 cup honey ale, at room temp 2 tbs grated fresh ginger 1 clove garlic 1/4 cup vegetable oil 1/2 tsp salt 1 tbs poppy seeds * Dissolve honey and cornstarch in the honey ale, then slowly cook in a 1 quart saucepan over low heat * Put the ginger, garlic, and oil in a blender and puree on high until smooth. Whisk this mixture into the honey ale saucepan, and cook until thick. * Cool to room temp, whisk in the salt and poppy seeds, and chill before use. Miller assumed the ownership of the Tumwater brewery as part of the recent agreement between the Stroh Brewery Co, Pabst and Miller. Miller says it will upgrade the brewery and purchase new equipment with an initial $ 10 million investment. * If you pick up a college newspaper this month you'll see a full page ad for "Binge Beer". This advertisement is really a mock ad that is part of a campaign by the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges (NASULGC). The ad lists the consequences of alcohol abuse and binge drinking. The ad will run in student newspapers, local papers, USA Today, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. Funding for the campaign comes from the 113 members and supporters of NSULGC, who includes the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and Barnes & Noble, Inc. For example, the Roman writer Tacitus in his work Germania uses the word "umor" to identify the common beverage of the Gauls: "a fermented liquor extracted from barley and wheat". The same word "umor" was applied to beer in several writings throughout the early Middle Ages. Humor was used to identify beer and the fun in jokes. A thousand years ago people must have thought that "fun and jokes" came hand in hand with "umor" meaning beer.
