Such an acquisition would make Pabst the biggest maker of regional beers in the country. * Organic foods have been the rage for years now, but British drinkers are taking it into the beer scene. British supermarkets are saying that demand for organic beer, brewed with hops grown without fertilizers or pesticides, is at an all time high. Samuel Smith Old Brewery in Tadcaster already brews with organic hops imported from New Zealand. * Kirin Brewery Co. stated that it will phase out the use of genetically engineered corn in its beer production by the spring of 2001. The corn, imported from the US, is said to contain genetically modified content. Although the corn causes no harm to humans, Kirin will phase it out due to consumer resistance to gene-spliced foods. US growers will ship only natural corn starting next spring. * Miller Brewing Co is planning to enter the gourmet soda market. Miller is assuming control of three of Henry Weinhard's brand name sodas and will produce a non-alcoholic beverage other than Sharp's n/a beer for the first time since Prohibition. Primus was the fourth duke of Brabant, Louvain, and Antwerp, Belgium. He is known as Jean Primus in France and Gambrinus elsewhere in Europe.
