We have lots promotions lined up for the month of July! http://www.tacomac.com/cgi-bin/calendars/tacomac/WebEvent Cooking With Beer ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Artichokes with Lemon Lager Sauce 4 artichokes 1 gallon boiling water 1 egg 1/4 cup Pilsner beer 1 tsp cornstarch 1 tbs fresh lemon juice Pinch cayenne pepper 2 tbs butter *trim the long stems and tough outer leaves from the artichokes. Use a pair of tongs to place the artichokes in the boiling water and cook until tender (35-45 mins depending on size) * place the egg, lager, cornstarch, lemon juice and cayenne pepper in a blender, cover lid with a towel to prevent splashes. The lager will foam a bit. * Melt the butter in a 1-quart heavy saucepan over very low heat until deep gold. The milk solids will foam up and turn brown. Skim off the browned bits and whisking continuously add the lager-lemon mixture. * Cook the sauce over low heat, whisking constantly until it thickens. Serve warm, as a dipping sauce for the artichokes. The Polish govt banned sales of beverages with alcohol levels higher than 4.5% during Pope John Paul's five-day visit to the Polish capital of Warsaw. Local pubs and taverns felt the crunch, but sales of Pilsner Urquell -at 4.4% abv- soared! Urquell is not usually so well received in Poland. * The sales volume for beer brewed in the Netherlands dropped 4% during the first 5 months of 1999 as compared to the same period last year. Heineken NV controls almost half of the beer sales in the Dutch market. Heineken also agreed to buy Cruzcampo from Diageo Plc for 145 billion Spanish pesetas ($907 million) to more than double its share of the Spanish market to 37%. * Pyramid Breweries, Inc of Seattle has issued a "stockholders rights" plan to protect its investors in the event of a takeover. The plan, which is effective immediately, will ensure the investor of the value of the stock should a takeover occur. * Adolph Coors Co is debating the hiring of the Chinese unit of Boonrawd Brewery, Thailands largest brewer, to produce Coors beer for sale in China. Boonrawd is being considered because of its modern facilities. * Shenandoah Brewing Co of Washington DC is opening its pub and brewery on June 19 making it the first "full service" beer provider in the DC area and a "working pub for the working beer lover". * Charlie Papazian, home brewing guru and founder of the American Home Brewers Association, just completed seven-day tour through the Southwest. The tour drew over 400 home brewers and beer lovers, covered over 1200 miles that included stops at ten brewpubs and six home-brew shops. That's one day's equivalent in Bavaria. * Marks and Spencer stores in Britain lost the labeling rights to the brand Premium Original Pilsner Lager after a suit from Czech brewer Pilsner Uquell. * Luxembourg continues as the world leader in total alcohol consumption, with 11.8 liters of 100% alcohol per capita being consumed.
