Toast the barley in the oil until it turns light gold. Pour in the chicken broth and 3/4 cup of the water. Bring to a simmer. Add salt, stir and cover. Add more water as the cooking liquid is absorbed by the grain. * Place the currants and Scotch ale in n ovenproof glass dish and cover with plastic wrap. Microwave on high heat for 1 minute, remove wrap, and let fruit cool in the ale. * Toast the pecans in an 8 inch skillet over low heat. When the barley is tender remove from heat. Stir in the currants and ale, toasted pecans, and scallions. Serve as a side dish for lamb patties or other roasted meats. Anheuser-Busch, the largest brewery in the world, has an ongoing dispute with the Czech brewery over the trademark to the name "Budweiser". "Budweis" means "a person from Budweis" just as Pilsner means "a person from Pilsen" and both terms enjoyed wide popularity to denote "old world" brewing. Pilsner obviously became a generic term whereas "budweiser" did not. The matter is being pursued by the courts. * Fosters Brewing Group Ltd has sold its share of its "unprofitable" brewrey in Tianjin, china to the joint venture group CRE Beverage Ltd. Fosters sold its brewery in Guandong, China in February, but will continue to operate its Shanghai location. * The Blue Ridge Brewing Co in Charlottesville, VA has been sold. The current owners Bok and Paul Summers sold to new owner/restauranteur John Spagnola who will make some cosmetic changes and reopen under a new name. This is the first area publication since the departure of Barley Corn. The first issue of the free, bi-monthly publication will be out in August and will cover the beer scene in D.C., Maryland, Virginia, eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, southern N.J., and West Virginia. * Heineken has recently come underfire for a British ad campaign. The holiday ad depicted a nativity scene and the phrase "It's a girl. How refreshing. How Heineken". The withdrawl of the ads was rapid in response to public outcry. * Australia has a new rum-flavored beer called Bundaberg Premium. The rum infused brew comes in clear bottles and weighs in at 5.0% abv with 0.5% of the alcohol coming from the rum. "Bunny" joins the world's portfolio of flavored beers, some of which have showed considerable acceptance. * Rockies Brewing Co., America's oldest microbrewery, is celebrating its 20th anniversary of brewing traditional handcrafted beers. The brewery was established in 1979 in a goat shed in Longmont, Colorado as Boulder Brewing Co. the first brewmaster was Tom burns.
