Zig Zag Lager was awarded the gold medal in the lager category which marks the first time a gold medal has been given an American microbrewery on European soil! The Eurobiere medal is prestigious because it was awarded in Strasbourg where 75% of all the beer in France is consumed. * A Magistrates court in London has granted the world's first liquor license "allowing customers to self serve their own beer" The license was granted to "YO! Below" a new Japanese beer hall and Sake cellar concept. The license allows customers to serve their own brew from specially designed beer taps fitted to each table. At the touch of a button exactly one third of a pint of beer is delivered to the glass. A meter on each table registers the units consumed. The serving staff is able to turn off the taps from a central switch to monitor excessive and underage drinking. The new "YO" intends to roll out in America next year and also features smoke extracting ashtrays, table massage, call for help lights, and waitresses who sing. * Big Rock Brewery will receive a gold medal on June 23rd at the Marketing magazine Package Design Awards in Toronto for the new product design launched late last year. It has more verses relating to brewing than to the creation of the world. In the Kalevala, the barley comes from Osmo's field and his daughter brews the beer. The legend says that a song dealing with the origins of beer must be sung while the beer is brewed. (Encyclopedia of Beer, Christine P. Rhodes, editor.)
