Throughout Latin America, for example, beer was an important component of some people's diets, and children always received their share. As recently as the early 19th century, some British boarding schools were expected to provide students with appropriate brews, often produced on the premises. In the collective medical wisdom of 15th-19th century America and Europe, dark beers were commonly prescribed to very young patients as a tonic and restorer. -Encyclopedia of Beer, Christine P.
