For thousands of years their ancestors made offerings to Four Directions, then they would pray, then brew the beer. The drink was known as "the brew that renews the race". In the Middle Ages, the predominant ale in Europe was "gruit"-grain fermented with a secret blend of three mild to moderately narcotic herbs: yarrow, wild rosemary and sweet gale, also known as bog myrtle. Gruit was taxed. In fact, Europe's rulers staunchly resisted the use of the hop, which grew wild and was not taxed. Hopped beer, unlike gruit, puts you to sleep and dulls sexual drives. The reason is that hops are high in estrogen. They're very good for women going through menopause. But when men drink a lot of beer, they get what brewers in England used to call "brewer's droop". -Stephen Harrod Buhner, Sacred and Herbal healing Beers: The Secrets of Ancient Fermentation, Brewer Publications, Boulder. *all above information from What's On Tap, Berkeley, California.
