Great Britian's Millenium Commission has funded a pub project to bring science to local communities. According to an article by Rachel Emma Silverman in the Jan 28 Wall Street Journal, the $19,000 grant allowed a science book illustrator and a plant biologist to create science questions -usually alcohol related- to be printed on beer coasters and bar mats. Each week the questions change and the answers are posted on pub menu boards a week later. Miller Brewing Co. will test market a new brand, Icehouse Light soon . the beer will be marketed in Raleigh, NC; Athens, Ga; Savannah, Ga; Orlando, Fl; and Tampa, Fl. In Saxon times in England, rents and taxes were paid all or in part with homebrewed ale. In an age when the sale of surplus beer was often the only source of hard currency, common folk considered good beer the equal of gold. Feudal landlords often stipulated payments of beer rather than coins. In Pharoic Egypt, and even earlier in Mesopotamia, measures of beer defined the minimum wage of the day. Thus, rents, tithes, and tributes were commonly in the form of assets. Throughout the ages, landlords eased the pain of annual rent days by providing beer to the rent-paying rabble. Those were the days! "Encyclopedia of Beer" Christine P. Rhodes, Editor An Owl Book, Henry Holt and Co.
