1) New beer from Black Star Brewery 2) Brewery Profile Great Northern Brewing 3) Dogwood Cask Ale Event *********************************************************** We have another great beer available at Taco Mac this weekend.... BLACK STAR BREWERY Black Star Golden Lager (available this Friday!) A full bodied traditional American Lager, golden in color. The unique double-hopped process gives this beer a highly pronounced, tangy hop aroma and a crisp, refreshing finish. Ingredients: 97% pale malt 3% caramel 60 malt Mt. Hood and Czech Saaz hops Alcohol content: 5.0 % by volume IBU: 22 Black Star gets much of its flavor from "double hopping", first in the kettle and than in the whirlpool. The "first" hopping is actually two additions of hops. The first addition is the main bittering contribution. The longer the hops stay in the kettle, the more bitter the beer. A second addition in the kettle is less for bittering and more for flavor. The third and final addition (that makes it "double" hopped) is in the whirlpool, for aroma. It contributes more bite and hop presence, but not a lot of bitterness. The bitterness from hops will balance out the residual sugar in finished beer. The Wessinger family is one of the oldest brewing families in North America. Minott Wessinger's great-great-grandfather was Henry Weinhard who founded one of the most renowned breweries in the West. Minott noticed that many of the beers hitting the taps seemed to be ales. He thought that this would be an opportunity to create some unique lagers which require a more involved method of brewing. So, they built a three story brewery including a copper brew kettle, lauter tun screens imported from Germany, a replica of the weather vane that once stood atop Henry Weinhard's brewery, and an old fashioned brew-house tower designed so that the beer would be brewed with the gravity flow method. The brewery also includes a friendly tasting room which overlooks the Big Mountain. By combining double-hopped brewing with the finest ingredients available, including the purest water, premium hops from the Pacific Northwest and Zatec, Czechoslovakia, and Western two-row barley malt the guys at Black Star believe that they produce a really good beer. *********************************************************** The Great Northern Brewing Co.
